Polypropylene is an economical material that offers a combination of outstanding, thermal, mechanical, physical, and electrical properties not found in any other thermoplastic. Polypropylene is known for its excellent chemical resistance in corrosive environments and provides excellent resistance to organic solvents, degreasing agents and electrolytic attack. It is light in weight, resistant to staining, and has a low moisture absorption rate. Polypropylene copolymer (PPCO) is a bit softer than homopolymer and will have better impact strength, it is tougher and more durable than homopolymer polypropylene. Copolymer polypropylene tends to have better stress crack resistance and low temperature toughness than homopolymer at the expense of a small reductions in other properties.

Polypropylene Properties
  • High melting point: for similar plastics in the same weight category, polypropylene has a higher melting point.
  • Translucent hue: polypropylene can be used for applications where some transfer of light is important or where it is of aesthetic value.
  • Toughness: polypropylene is elastic without being too soft.
  • Resistance to chemicals: diluted bases and acids don’t react readily with polypropylene, which makes it a good choice for containers of such liquids.
  • Fatigue resistance: polypropylene retains its shape after a lot of torsion, bending, and/or flexing. This property is especially valuable for making living hinges.

At Birch plastics we source single stream postindustrial feedstocks. This allows us to manufacture a quality consistent product without the odors or contaminates associated with the average PCR that is in the market today. Birch manufactures our reprocessed pellets at our compounding facility located in Houston. This material can be purchased in truckload and less than truckload quantities.

4-Phase Quality Control Procedures

Phase 1
It all starts with a consistent single stream post-industrial sourcing. Then each box is probed looking for foreign materials, paper, and foaming agent.

Phase 2
A team member will take a probed sample from the top, middle, and bottom section of each box. Our lab technicians then test the regrind in our certified melt index equipment to confirm the melt flow is accurate and to look for changing conditions in the resin that might surface once it has been melted.

Phase 3
After passing the first two parts of our quality control procedures the material is moved to the metal removing equipment. At this point the regrind is dumped through a magnet system while being watched by our trained technicians for any strange looking material that could be hiding in the box. If found, it is tested on our Perkin Elmer FT-IR spectrometer to confirm it is not a foreign resin and a melt index is tested to insure consistency.

Phase 4
The final stage of the process is the regrind is vacuumed into a Kice Aspiration System where the fines and paper are removed from the regrind and then is packaged in a quality Gaylord box with a liner and a lid. The box is then weighed on a certified scale.
